A disturbed weather system is likely to develop over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining Andaman Sea around November 11, the Department of Meteorology has warned.
The system could develop into a low-pressure area around November 13 and subsequently intensify into a depression around November 15, said Udeni Weerasinghe, a meteorologist on duty at the department.
The department has advised fishermen and naval personnel operating in these sea areas to remain particularly vigilant.
Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers are expected in most parts of the island after 1.00 p.m. today.
Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is possible at some locations in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces, as well as in the Galle, Matara and Kurunegala districts, Weerasinghe said.
Showers are also possible during the morning hours. Temporarily strong winds may occur during thundershowers, and the public has been urged to take precautions against lightning.
Showers or thundershowers are also expected at several locations in the seas around the island today.
Wind speeds are expected to remain between 20 and 30 kmph. However, temporarily strong winds of 60–70 kmph may occur in these sea areas during thundershowers, she added.
Fishermen and naval personnel have therefore been advised to remain alert to changing weather conditions in the sea areas. (Newswire)
