The Department of Meteorology has issued an amber warning for severe lightning and heavy rainfall in several parts of Sri Lanka, with showers of around 100 mm expected in some areas.

According to the warning, thundershowers accompanied by frequent lightning are likely in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces, as well as the Galle, Matara and Kurunegala districts, during the evening and night.

The department also warned that strong gusty winds reaching 60–70 km/h and very rough sea conditions could occur temporarily during thunderstorms in coastal waters from Mannar to Hambantota via Puttalam, Colombo and Galle.

Authorities cautioned that the adverse weather could cause localised flooding in low-lying areas, disruptions to road transport, power and communication services, and damage to infrastructure.

The warning also highlighted the possibility of landslides, rockfalls and soil erosion in vulnerable areas, while rough seas could pose risks to fishing vessels.

The public has been advised to avoid outdoor activities during thunderstorms, seek shelter in secure buildings and stay away from open water bodies.

People in flood-prone and landslide-prone areas have been urged to remain alert and follow official warnings.

The amber warning is valid until 1.00 a.m. on Monday, November 9. (Newswire)
