The Colombo Law Society, the largest branch association of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka with more than 7,000 legal professionals, has filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the constitutionality of the proposed 22nd Constitutional Amendment Bill.
The Bill was presented to Parliament on Aug. 18.
The petition, filed under case number SC/SD/81/2026, was submitted by Colombo Law Society President Sadun Nagahawatta and Secretary Lahiru Welgama on behalf of the society and its members.
The petition seeks a special determination from the Supreme Court on several provisions of the proposed amendment, which the petitioners contend are inconsistent with constitutional provisions protecting the sovereign judicial power of the people.
The society said the provisions raise concerns relating to constitutional governance, the independence of the judiciary and public trust.
Colombo Law Society said it has consistently engaged in matters concerning the rule of law, constitutional governance and judicial independence.
The decision to challenge the Bill was taken following deliberations by its Executive Committee and reflects the society’s stated commitment to safeguarding constitutional principles and the rule of law.
The petitioners are represented by Attorney-at-Law Nalin Samarakoon, who is instructing on their behalf in the proceedings before the Supreme Court. (Newswire)
