Sri Lanka is experiencing a severe salt shortage due to delays in imports and disruptions in local production, pushing retail prices up to Rs. 400 per kilogram.

Chairman of the Salt Producers’ Association, Ganaka Amarasinghe, said the government-approved import of 30,000 metric tons of non-iodized salt has yet to fully ease the market, citing slow import processing as a key issue.

A government spokesperson said a shipment from India is expected shortly and the situation should normalize within two weeks, with prices likely to drop. Meanwhile, efforts are underway to ramp up local salt production. (Newswire)
