Renovation work on the historic Maradana Railway Station will begin Sept. 15 under the government’s “Dream Destination” project, officials said.

Maradana is the second-largest railway station in Colombo District and is considered one of the country’s most significant heritage stations. First built in 1889 as a wooden structure, it became a principal hub after operations on the Kandy and Southern lines outgrew the Colombo Fort station. A permanent building was opened on July 12, 1893, and the current station, designed by architect Sally Mariyakar in British style, was inaugurated Nov. 9, 1908.

Authorities said the new renovation will cover only selected sections of the station to avoid damage to its historic character. The work, carried out with private sector support, aims to enhance passenger facilities and modernize infrastructure while preserving the station’s heritage. (Newswire)
