The Department of Meteorology says showers are expected in several provinces today, with fairly heavy showers above 50 mm likely at some places.

Several spells of showers will occur in the Northern, North-central, Uva, Eastern and Central provinces.

Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts after 1.00 pm, while fairly heavy showers above 50 mm are likely at some places.

The public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Meanwhile, showers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Trincomalee via Kankasanthurai.

Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the other sea areas around the island in the evening or night.

Winds will be north-easterly, and wind speed will be 25-35 kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 45 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Kankasanthurai via Mannar and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota.

The sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Kankasanthurai via Mannar and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota will be fairly rough at times. The other sea areas around the island will be moderate.

Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers. (Newswire)
