The Government of India today handed over a consignment of essential anti-tuberculosis (TB) medicines to the Government of Sri Lanka to help ensure the continued availability of treatment for TB patients in the country.

According to the High Commission of India in Sri Lanka, the consignment, weighing approximately three tonnes, contains more than 1.5 million tablets with an estimated value of Rs. 52 million.

The medicines were handed over by Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha to Health Minister Nalinda Jayatissa at the Ministry of Health in Colombo. Deputy Health Minister Hansaka Wijemuni was also present.

The assistance was provided in response to a request from the Sri Lankan Government and includes essential first-line medicines used in the treatment of tuberculosis.

The medicines were sourced with the support of India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and are expected to help ensure the continuity and availability of treatment for TB patients in Sri Lanka.

The latest donation follows another health-related assistance package provided by India in August 2026, when 500 litres of Technical Malathion were donated at the Sri Lankan Government’s request to support dengue-control efforts.

India’s development cooperation with Sri Lanka in the health sector also includes the construction and upgrading of hospitals and healthcare facilities, the supply of medicines and medical equipment, and capacity-building and training programmes.

The Indian High Commission said the latest assistance forms part of India’s people-centric development partnership with Sri Lanka under its Neighbourhood First policy. (Newswire)
