
A Sri Lankan passenger who allegedly attempted to smuggle a stock of hashish into the country was arrested by officers of the Airport Police Narcotics Bureau at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake early today (10).
The suspect, a 24-year-old resident of Grandpass, Colombo, had arrived at the airport at around 12.30 a.m. on a Thai Airways flight from Bangkok, Thailand.
During an inspection of his luggage, officers discovered 15 chocolate-style packets concealing hashish. Investigations revealed that the suspect had smuggled in a total of 4 kilograms and 778 grams of the narcotic.
The Police Narcotics Bureau stated that the street value of the seized hashish is estimated at nearly Rs. 47.8 million.
The suspect is due to be produced before the Negombo Magistrate’s Court today to obtain detention orders for further investigations. (NewsWire)
