The foundation stone for the Maitri Setu Project, aimed at celebrating the shared Buddhist heritage of India and Sri Lanka, has been laid at the Sri Bodhidrumaramaya Purana Viharaya in Biyagama.
Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Santosh Jha announced the initiative in a social media statement, highlighting the longstanding cultural and religious ties between the two countries.
According to Jha, the project commemorates the enduring legacies of Ven. Anagarika Dharmapala and B. R. Ambedkar, recognising their contributions to Buddhist heritage.
The foundation stone was laid in the presence of Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs Hiniduma Sunil Senevi, Indian Rajya Sabha MP Jyoti Waghmare and Sri Lankan MP Ashoka Sapumal Ranwala.
