Children of migrant workers enrolled in daycare centres will receive a monthly allowance of Rs. 10,000 under a new programme being introduced by the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment, officials informed the Ministerial Consultative Committee on Women and Child Affairs.
The announcement was made during a Committee meeting chaired by Women and Child Affairs Minister Saroja Savithri Paulraj, with the participation of Deputy Minister Namal Sudarshana.
Officials said the allowance would be provided for children aged between two and 13 years whose parents are employed overseas, provided the children are enrolled in registered daycare centres.
Officials noted that approvals for the initiative are in the final stages and payments are expected to be channelled monthly through District Secretariat offices directly to registered daycare centres.
Minister Saroja Savithri Paulraj said awareness programmes should be launched to ensure the public is informed about the initiative, describing it as a positive step to support families of migrant workers.
The Committee also discussed recruitment for female police officers, with officials stating that applications have been called for 50 female Sub-Inspectors and 2,600 female Police Constables, including targeted campaigns to recruit Tamil-speaking officers. (Newswire)
