Passenger drones are currently undergoing test flights at Colombo Port City ahead of an official demonstration scheduled for November 11.
The trials are being conducted as part of preparations to introduce electric passenger drone technology in Sri Lanka, with video footage showing a drone being tested in the Port City area.
The initiative involves Chinese aviation technology company EHang Holdings, which specialises in electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.
The technology is being explored for potential applications in passenger transportation, tourism and logistics.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the official demonstration will showcase the potential of passenger drones to improve urban air mobility and provide new travel experiences for local and foreign tourists. defence.lk
The Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka has been involved in discussions with EHang Holdings and relevant government authorities on introducing the technology.
The first aircraft, reportedly capable of carrying two passengers, has already arrived in Sri Lanka as part of the pilot project.
Authorities are also considering the potential use of the technology for emergency medical transportation and cargo deliveries to remote areas.
The November 11 demonstration is expected to provide an opportunity to assess the aircraft’s capabilities before any wider introduction of passenger drone services in Sri Lanka. (Newswire)
