Sri Lanka, South Korea Deputy Ministers hold talks to boost cooperation

Sri Lanka’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Employment, Arun Hemachandra, met with Eui-hae Cecilia Chung, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of South Korea, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Seoul for substantive bilateral discussions.

The talks focused on deepening economic cooperation, expanding foreign employment pathways, enhancing development cooperation, and strengthening defence ties, alongside Sri Lanka’s ongoing economic recovery efforts, including progress on debt restructuring.

Deputy Minister Hemachandra expressed appreciation for South Korea’s timely assistance following Cyclone Ditwah and requested continued support under the Government’s Rebuilding Sri Lanka initiative. 

Both sides also noted the growing cultural affinity between the two countries, particularly the strong engagement of Sri Lankan youth with Korean culture, which has contributed to strengthened people-to-people linkages.

As Sri Lanka and South Korea prepare to mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations next year, the two deputy ministers agreed to commemorate the milestone in a meaningful manner, including through high-level visits and strengthened institutional engagement.

The discussions reaffirmed the shared commitment of both nations to further strengthen the Sri Lanka–South Korea partnership in the years ahead. (Newswire)
