Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Road Safety, W. P. J. Senadheera, says 82 people have lost their lives in 77 fatal accidents during the first 13 days of 2026.

Speaking to local media, DIG Senadheera said that the majority of these accidents have occurred due to drunk driving.

He further said that at least 500 drunk drivers are arrested per day in Sri Lanka, revealing that sufficient breathalyzers have been brought to the country.

DIG Senadheera also noted that a pilot project has been introduced in Colombo, where mobile drug testing units have been established to identify individuals driving after consuming alcohol or drugs. (Newswire)
