Tamil-Canadian Member of Parliament Gary Anandasangaree has been appointed as Canada’s new Minister of Public Safety in Prime Minister Mark Carney’s latest cabinet reshuffle.
Anandasangaree, who was sworn in today, will now oversee several of the country’s top national security and law enforcement agencies, including the Canada Border Services Agency, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), and the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS).
This marks a significant elevation for the Jaffna-born MP, who previously served as Canada’s Minister of Justice and Attorney General under Carney’s first cabinet in March — a historic role that made him the first Tamil-Canadian to hold that position.
Anandasangaree is the son of veteran Sri Lankan Tamil politician Veerasingham Anandasangaree, the Secretary-General of the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF). (Newswire)
