An opposition legislator has raised concerns in Parliament over whether the Iranian warship that ran into distress off the coast of Galle had been struck during the ongoing US-Israeli attacks on Iran.

Opposition MP Chamara Sampath questioned whether the Iranian frigate ‘IRIS Dena’ had been hit amid the current military escalation involving the United States and Israel against Iran.

However, there was no immediate response from the government regarding the claim.

Earlier, authorities confirmed that the Iranian Navy vessel carrying around 180 individuals reported distress about 40 nautical miles off the coast of Galle, prompting the Sri Lanka Navy to launch a rescue operation.

Dozens of individuals from the ship have since been rescued, with several admitted to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital for treatment. (Newswire)
