Founder of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Basil Rajapaksa is due to appear before the Matara Magistrate’s Court on Friday, November 21, in connection with a case involving the alleged illegal acquisition of land using Rs. 50 million in unlawfully obtained funds. However, it remains uncertain whether the former minister will return to Sri Lanka for the hearing.
Rajapaksa’s legal team in May told court he is receiving treatment in the United States for spinal and nerve complications following a fall from a chair. They said an American doctor had advised him to avoid air travel for six months, raising questions over his ability to travel back for Friday’s proceedings.
His absence at earlier hearings prompted prosecutors to request that his bail be cancelled and a warrant issued. The court declined, noting his prior compliance, but directed him to appear on the next date.
Speculation has intensified as the hearing coincides with a major political event: the Joint Opposition rally scheduled for November 21, led by the SLPP — a party founded by Rajapaksa.
However, there has been no official confirmation from Rajapaksa’s representatives or family on whether he intends to travel. (Newswire)
