Sri Lanka Police have searched a hotel in Panadura where 32 Chinese nationals were staying, following information about suspected online financial fraud and illegal business activities.

According to the Police Media Division, the raid was carried out at a hotel in the Nalloruwa area on November 6 and 7 by officers of the Panadura Divisional Crime Investigation Unit.

The operation followed information received by the Senior Superintendent of Police in charge of the Panadura Division that a group of Chinese nationals staying at the hotel may have been involved in illegal online activities or financial scams.

Police obtained a search warrant from the Panadura Magistrate’s Court before conducting the operation.

The investigation was supported by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Police Special Task Force (STF), Criminal Records Division, Police Kennels Division and Department of Official Languages.

During the search, police found 32 Chinese nationals staying at the hotel and seized 23 computers and related accessories for further examination.

Police said the equipment was taken to the Panadura South Police Station as investigators seek to determine whether any criminal offences had been committed.

The CID is conducting further investigations.

Meanwhile, police warned that several cases of financial fraud involving groups of foreign nationals operating from hotels, guesthouses, resorts and other accommodation facilities had been uncovered in Sri Lanka in recent months.

Accommodation providers have been urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.

Police also requested the public to provide information through the emergency hotlines 118 or 119, or to contact the nearest police station. (Newswire)
