Sri Lanka is set to deepen cooperation with the Maldives through two new Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) approved by the Cabinet of Ministers, focusing on postgraduate medical education and youth and sports development.

One MoU is to be signed between the University of Colombo and the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Maldives to expand collaboration in postgraduate education.

Under the agreement, Sri Lanka will provide training for Maldivian medical officers and dental surgeons, with support from the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine.

The agreement between the University of Colombo and the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Maldives also includes provisions to recruit specialist medical officers for the Maldives on a short- or long-term basis, depending on healthcare needs.

The proposal was presented by the Prime Minister in her capacity as Minister of Education, Higher Education, and Professional Education.

In a separate initiative, the Cabinet also approved an MoU on sports and youth development between the two countries.

The agreement aims to create a structured framework for collaboration in youth empowerment, sports performance, leadership development, and institutional partnerships.

It includes joint programs, exchange of expertise, and capacity-building initiatives.

This proposal was presented by the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports and is expected to enhance long-term cooperation between Sri Lanka and the Maldives in both fields. (Newswire)
