Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala today informed Parliament about investigations done on possible life threats to Sri Lankan politicians, including Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa.
Addressing the Parliament, he said the Prime Minister’s Office had received an email containing death threats to PM Harini Amarasuriya.
“An Additional Secretary of the Prime Minister’s Office has filed a complaint in this regard. We have requested a report from Google concerning the email. We have received the report,” he said.
Minister Wijepala further said that it has been found that the IP address of the email was linked to the Netherlands and Germany. “A report has been requested. After receiving the report, we will present facts to the court,” he added.
On threats to the life of Opposition Leader MP Sajith Premadasa, the Public Security Minister revealed that a complaint had been received through the Ministry’s emergency hotline in August 2024.
He revealed that the complaint claimed that preparations were being made by an associate of underworld figure ‘Loku Patti’ for a sniper attack targeting Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa.
“We have launched a probe into the complaint. It has been found that the facts presented by the informant were false. An investigation has also been conducted into the mobile number through which the complaint was made. It has been proven that the facts related to the complaint were untrue,” he said. (Newswire)
