Construction work on a new coastal recreational park in the Silavathurai–Arippu area of Mannar has commenced, with the project aimed at protecting the coastline, supporting the local fishing community and promoting tourism.
The foundation stone for the project was laid yesterday (14) under the patronage of Deputy Minister of Environment Anton Jayakody.
According to the Ministry of Environment, the project is being implemented as part of the Government’s coastal conservation programme, which includes the development of recreational parks in coastal areas across the country.
The Silavathurai–Arippu coastal park project was initiated considering the tourism potential of the area surrounding the historic Doric Bungalow in Mannar.
The project aims to address severe coastal erosion along the Silavathurai–Arippu coastline while protecting the surrounding coastal environment.
It will also improve facilities and provide additional space for local fishermen to moor their boats, supporting fishing activities in the area.
The Ministry noted that several similar coastal recreational park projects across the island are currently nearing completion.
The coastal conservation activities in the Silavathurai–Arippu area are being carried out jointly by the Ministry of Environment and the Department of Coast Conservation and Coastal Resource Management, using a scientific approach to coastal protection. (Newswire)
