Kamindu Mendis has been replaced as Sri Lanka’s ODI and T20I vice-captain, just months after being appointed to the leadership role by the new selection committee headed by Kapila Wijegunawardena.
Sri Lanka Cricket’s squads announced for the upcoming tour of England name former white-ball captain Charith Asalanka as vice-captain of both the ODI and T20I teams, with Kusal Mendis continuing as captain.
The change comes after Kamindu was appointed Sri Lanka’s all-format vice-captain ahead of the West Indies tour in May. He was named deputy to Kusal Mendis in ODIs and T20Is and to Dhananjaya de Silva in Tests.
However, for the England white-ball tour, the selectors have now handed the deputy role to Asalanka. Kamindu remains in both the ODI and T20I squads.
Asalanka previously captained Sri Lanka in white-ball cricket before Kusal Mendis was handed the captaincy following the appointment of the new selection panel.
The exact reason for removing Kamindu from the ODI and T20I vice-captaincy has not been officially disclosed.
Sri Lanka have named 16-member squads for both formats and will play three T20Is and three ODIs in England, with the team scheduled to depart on September 5. (Newswire)
