Two individuals have been arrested over a dangerous three-wheeler stunt in Weliweriya after a video of the incident circulated on social media, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police in charge of Traffic Management and Road Safety W.P.J. Senadheera said.

The incident took place on Monday (30) along the main road from Nedungahena towards Meegahawatta, within the Weliweriya Police Division.

DIG Senadheera said the suspect vehicle and those involved were identified following an analysis of the viral video by police.

“When we became aware of the video circulating on social media, our technical team analysed it and identified that the incident had taken place within the Weliweriya Police area,” he said.

He said instructions were immediately issued to the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of Weliweriya Police to locate and arrest those involved.

“Even if a police officer is not present at the scene, we will take action based on information received through social media or other sources. We strictly enforce the law against such incidents,” he said.

Following investigations, police arrested the 22-year-old driver of the three-wheeler and its 23-year-old owner, both residents of the area.

Police said medical examinations revealed that the vehicle owner had tested positive for cannabis, while the driver was found to have consumed intoxicating tablets at the time of the incident.

DIG Senadheera also thanked the individual who shared the video on social media, noting that such cooperation helps prevent serious offences.

“We are grateful to those who provide information through social media, as it helps the police take action and prevent serious incidents caused by reckless drivers,” he said.

He said the suspects are to be produced before court under charges including dangerous driving and attempted culpable homicide. (NewsWire)
