A police sub-inspector attached to the Kinniya Police Station has been arrested on allegations of bribery, the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption said Thursday.
The officer was taken into custody by investigators of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption at around 5:20 p.m. on Dec. 31 while at the complaints division of the Kinniya Police Station.
According to the commission, the arrest followed a complaint by a member of the public alleging that the officer had demanded Rs. 10,000 as a bribe to carry out legal action related to an assault complaint and the arrest of two suspects. Investigators said the money was allegedly sought to be obtained through an intermediary.
The suspect is due to be produced before the Trincomalee Magistrate’s Court, the commission said. (Newswire)
