President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, addressing the National War Heroes’ Day commemoration at the Ranaviru Monument in Battaramulla today, said there was no valid reason for former Army Commander Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka to have been imprisoned for over two and a half years.
The President stated that he had closely interacted with Fonseka during that period and emphasized that the decision to jail him was driven by power politics rather than law or justice.
“This conflict and war have repeatedly been used to gain, secure, and strengthen power. These were not natural outcomes, but deliberately manipulated for political gain—even to cover up crimes,” he noted.
President Dissanayake stressed that both in the North and the South, children had become victims of these power struggles. (Newswire)
