Severe lightning advisory for issued for 12 districts

The Department of Meteorology has issued an advisory warning of severe lightning activity across several parts of Sri Lanka, including the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and Uva provinces, as well as the districts of Kandy and Nuwara Eliya.

According to the department, thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely to occur in affected areas after 1:00 p.m., with temporary localized strong winds also expected.

Authorities have urged the public to take precautions to minimize potential damage and risk. Residents are advised to seek shelter indoors and avoid taking cover under trees during thunderstorms. People are also cautioned to stay away from open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations and water bodies.

The advisory further recommends avoiding the use of wired telephones and electrical appliances connected to power sources during thunderstorms. The use of open vehicles, including bicycles, tractors and boats, should also be avoided.

Officials warned of possible hazards from fallen trees and downed power lines and advised the public to contact local disaster management authorities in case of emergencies. (Newswire)
