Anton Perera, former Accountant at the Department of Sports Development, has spoken publicly for the first time following the recent conviction of former Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage.

Perera, whose complaint played a central role in triggering the investigation, alleged that he was sidelined after refusing to comply with politically driven directives. “They told me if I don’t work the way they want, I should leave. Then they made serious allegations and transferred me,” he said.

He also revealed that the controversial distribution of 15,000 carrom boards and 15,000 draught boards was not intended for schools or the general public, but was instead used to support political campaign offices ahead of an election.

“This was done targeting the election,” Perera stated. “Politicians can’t steal without the help of officials. That culture must stop.”

The recent court ruling found former Minister Aluthgamage guilty of misusing public funds, marking a rare conviction of a senior political figure. (Newswire)
