A retail trader in Colpetty has been fined Rs. 600,000 by the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court after pleading guilty to multiple offences under the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) Act involving expired and improperly labelled food products.

The CAA instituted legal proceedings before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court No. 5 against the trader following a special inspection carried out by its investigators.

During the raid, CAA officers seized imported packed chicken products that did not display the importer’s or distributor’s name and address, batch number or country of origin, packaged bread products without manufacturer or importer details, packaged food items for which supplier invoices or purchase bills could not be produced, brown sugar packets without the mandatory Sri Lanka Standards (SLS) certification mark, and expired food products.

When the case was taken up on Wednesday (08), the court imposed a total fine of Rs. 600,000, comprising Rs. 100,000 for each of the six charges.

The court also ordered that all seized food items produced as case material be destroyed immediately. (Newswire)
