Rs. 500,000 fine for restaurant over Rs. 100 water bottle

A popular restaurant in Batticaloa has been fined Rs. 500,000 by the Batticaloa Magistrate’s Court for selling a 500ml bottled drinking water above its marked retail price.

According to the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA), the restaurant had sold a bottle with a maximum retail price of Rs. 70 for Rs. 100.

The violation was detected during a raid carried out by officials of the Batticaloa District Consumer Affairs Authority.

Following the inspection, the CAA filed action before the Batticaloa Magistrate’s Court today, where the company pleaded guilty to the offence.

The court subsequently imposed a fine of Rs. 500,000 on the restaurant.

The Consumer Affairs Authority has urged the public to report traders selling goods above the stipulated maximum retail price through its hotline 1977 during office hours. (Newswire)
