Man arrested over gold jewellery theft from women on Anuradhapura–Colombo bus

Police have arrested a suspect in connection with the theft of gold jewellery belonging to three women travelling on a bus from Anuradhapura to Colombo.

According to police, the incident took place on April 2, 2026, during a night journey. The suspect was arrested on April 17 in the Pandulagama area by officers attached to the Anuradhapura Police Station.

Investigations have revealed that the suspect befriended the three women at the bus terminal before boarding the bus. He is alleged to have offered them food and a drink during the journey, after which the victims reportedly became drowsy.

Police said the theft was then carried out while the women were in a semi-conscious state.

Gold jewellery valued at approximately Rs. 1.7 million has since been recovered by investigators.

The suspect, a 54-year-old resident of Saliyawewa, is being further questioned by police. (NewsWire)
