GovPay rolls out traffic fine payments in Western Province

Sri Lanka has launched the first phase of its online traffic fine payment system via the GovPay app, allowing motorists in the Western Province to pay spot fines digitally starting today. The nationwide rollout is expected in September, following Cabinet approval in July.

ICJ makes 07-point proposal to Govt on Chemmani mass grave

The International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) has called for international oversight and expert involvement in the ongoing excavation of the Chemmani-Siththupaththi mass grave in Jaffna, where 101 skeletal remains, including those of children, have been recovered. Highlighting Sri Lanka’s long-standing failure to deliver justice for enforced disappearances, the ICJ outlined a seven-point proposal urging the government to ensure investigations meet global human rights standards. It also called on the UN Human Rights Council to extend its monitoring mandate, stressing that credible action at Chemmani is critical to restoring trust and advancing transitional justice.

Namal Rajapaksa in Maldives as arrest warrant issued

An arrest warrant was issued for MP Namal Rajapaksa by the Hambantota Magistrate’s Court after he failed to appear for a hearing. He is currently in the Maldives for a private event and is expected to return to Sri Lanka tomorrow to appear in court. Reports say he traveled on the same flight as President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who is on an official visit.

Former Navy Commander Nishantha Ulugetenne arrested

Former Navy Commander Admiral (Retired) Nishantha Ulugetenne has been arrested by the CID in connection with the disappearance of a youth from Pothuhera, which allegedly occurred during his time as Director of Naval Intelligence. Ulugetenne served as Navy Commander from July 2020 to December 2022.

Easter attacks : Case against Hemasiri & Pujith to be taken up in September

The case against former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando and ex-IGP Pujith Jayasundara over the 2019 Easter attacks has been postponed to September 18. The delay follows the promotion of one of the judges, prompting a request for a new bench to be appointed.
