The Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) has reportedly been directed to investigate allegations of promoting the banned Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) during the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) rally held in Anuradhapura.
The directive is reported to have been issued by the Inspector General of Police following a complaint over remarks made during the rally.
Police earlier confirmed that a complaint had been lodged with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) by a group of civil society activists, alleging that statements made at the rally amounted to promoting or supporting the LTTE.
The controversy centres on remarks made by Jaffna District MP Ramanathan Archchuna while addressing the SLPP rally at the Anuradhapura Municipal Council Grounds on September 12.
Archchuna reportedly referred to himself as a “Tiger” during his speech while making a political comparison involving President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
The rally was attended by several opposition politicians, including former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, former ministers and MPs.
The LTTE remains a proscribed organisation in Sri Lanka. (Newswire)
