Police have recovered several firearms, including a locally manufactured Mini Uzi-type automatic weapon, concealed at a public cemetery in Colombo, following investigations linked to an alleged organised crime figure recently deported from Dubai.
The weapons were discovered based on information obtained during the interrogation of Mahawatte Chamara, who is currently being detained and questioned by officers of the Central Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB).
Police said the cache included a Mini Uzi-type firearm, a foreign-made pistol, a magazine and three rounds of ammunition.
The Mini Uzi-type weapon is believed to have been manufactured in Sri Lanka and is the first such firearm recovered by law enforcement authorities in the country.
Police had previously received intelligence regarding the existence of a weapon of this type, but had been unable to locate it.
The police suspect the firearm may have been used by criminal groups to intimidate rivals. Further investigations are underway. (Newswire)
