The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) inaugurated the newly renovated Open Air Theatre at Viharamahadevi Park today (November 6) featuring upgraded amenities designed to better support artists, performers and audiences.
Led by Colombo Mayor Vraie Cally Balthazaar and municipal officials, the project places a strong emphasis on improving the backstage experience.
Key upgrades include the refurbishment of dressing rooms and attached washrooms, which have been equipped with air conditioning and personal lockers to ensure greater comfort and privacy for performers. Improvements for the public include new audience washrooms and a renovated entrance lobby. Furthermore, overall functionality was enhanced through updates to lighting, electrical systems, and drainage, alongside the addition of a caretaker’s room and a storeroom.
Additional restoration work involved repainting the roof and stage backdrop, repairing outdoor flooring, reinforcing the rubble wall, renovating external staircases, and replacing damaged entrance gates. Organized by the CMC’s Land Management and Environmental Development Division, the initiative forms part of the Council’s wider strategy to revitalize public spaces and foster growth within Colombo’s cultural and entertainment sector.
