Aragalaya Alliance to appeal death sentences in Amarakeerthi Athukorala case

Executive Committee Member of the Jana Aragalaya Alliance, Nuwan Bopage, says that appeals are expected to be filed regarding the death sentences imposed on 12 accused in the case related to the assault and killing of former MP Amarakeerthi Athukorala and his security officer.

Nuwan Bopage stated this while participating in a press conference convened in Colombo by a group of Aragalaya activists.

The Jana Aragalaya Alliance alleges that the real “killers” and “masterminds” behind the incident are still at large, and that the oppressive environment created by the Rajapaksa–Ranil coalition gave rise to such unfortunate events.

The representatives pointed out that the implementation of the law regarding other violent acts during the protest period has been biased.

They further noted that the intervention of the Attorney General’s Department in relation to the May 9 attack on the Galle Face protest site was weak, and that individuals such as Sanath Nishantha, Johnston Fernando, and Namal Rajapaksa are not being held accountable or subjected to fair investigation.

The protestors strongly criticized the actions of the Attorney General’s Department and the Police, alleging that while the government arrests and prosecutes youths claiming they stole a “bedsheet” from the Presidential Palace, it protects those who led the attacks against the protest movement.
