The Colombo High Court today (09) sentenced former Deputy Minister Sarana Gunawardena to four years of rigorous imprisonment in one of the corruption cases filed against him by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.
High Court Judge Mohamed Mihail also imposed a fine of Rs. 600,000 in addition to the prison term.
Gunawardena was earlier found guilty of corruption charges linked to his tenure as Chairman of the Development Lotteries Board in 2006.
The Bribery Commission alleged that he caused financial loss to the government by obtaining vehicles on a rental basis for the institution, thereby committing the offence of corruption.
The verdict was delivered in court today, with lawyers making submissions on sentencing before the punishment was announced. (Newswire)
