The two containers linked to crystal methamphetamine (ICE) production were released through the authorized Customs process, Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said.

“These containers were examined and cleared by Customs. However, Customs has launched an internal inquiry into potential gaps and malpractices, while the CID is also investigating the matter. These inquiries will determine whether the release was premeditated,” he said.

Responding to questions on allegations involving members of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), Jayatissa noted that the party has acknowledged the claims and taken immediate action.

“We believe this is why the party membership of the two individuals concerned was promptly suspended,” he said.

The Minister was referring to the suspension of SLPP membership for Sampath Manamperi, a former local government member, accused of possessing chemicals used in ICE production.

“Manamperi previously served as a police constable and an intelligence officer for a brief time. He was also a suspect in the murder of MP Raviraj. Despite these allegations, he was an SLPP electoral candidate,” Jayatissa said, adding that a manhunt is currently underway to arrest him. (Newswire)
