Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has strongly rejected a claim by U.S. President Donald Trump that she “begged” him for a photograph during the recent G7 Summit, triggering a diplomatic dispute between the two leaders.
Trump made the remarks during an interview with Italian broadcaster La7, claiming Meloni had repeatedly sought a photo with him at the summit in France.
Responding in a video statement, Meloni described Trump’s comments as “completely made up” and said she was “astonished” by the remarks. She added that neither she nor Italy would ever “beg” anyone for anything.
The dispute escalated after Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced he was cancelling a planned visit to the United States, describing Trump’s comments as offensive to both Meloni and Italy.
The row comes amid growing tensions between the two leaders over international issues, including the conflict involving Iran and broader transatlantic relations. Analysts say the public exchange marks a significant deterioration in what was once viewed as a close political relationship.
Several senior Italian officials have also rallied behind Meloni, condemning Trump’s remarks and defending the country’s dignity on the international stage. (Newswire)
