A 26-year-old suspect was arrested with more than 18 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as ‘ICE’, during a raid carried out by officers of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in the Rukgahathotupola area of Hirana on the evening of July 18.
Police said CID officers attached to the Homicide and Organised Crime Investigation Division recovered 18 kg and 716 g of ‘Ice’ along with an electronic weighing scale during the operation.
The suspect, a resident of Alubomulla, was taken into custody following the raid.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the narcotics had allegedly been brought to be distributed and trafficked across various parts of the country under the direction of two organised crime figures, police said.
The suspect is scheduled to be produced before the Panadura Magistrate’s Court today (July 19), where police will seek a seven-day detention order for further questioning.
Further investigations are being conducted by the CID’s Homicide and Organised Crime Investigation Division. (Newswire)
