The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has launched islandwide raids following a Rs. 13 increase in wheat flour prices without prior notification or agreement with the authority.
CAA Chairman Hemantha Samarakoon said that the authority learned about the price increase through media reports and had not received any official notification from wheat flour manufacturers.
He said the authority had contacted manufacturers by email, seeking explanations for the price revision and details of the increase.
The chairman explained that wheat flour is classified as a specified commodity under the Consumer Affairs Authority Act, requiring manufacturers to consult the authority and reach an agreement before increasing prices.
He warned that legal action would be taken against traders selling wheat flour at increased prices in violation of the law.
Further action will be determined after reviewing the manufacturers’ responses, he added. (Newswire)
