A 13-year-old boy died after part of a fountain collapsed during celebrations marking Spain’s FIFA World Cup victory in the western city of Ciudad Rodrigo early Monday.
Emergency services said the incident occurred at the Árbol Gordo fountain as supporters gathered to celebrate Spain’s 1-0 win over Argentina in the final.
Several people were reportedly standing on the fountain when its upper platform partially collapsed. The boy was seriously injured and taken to a local health centre, where he later died.
Two other people were injured in the incident, according to Reuters. Local reports said emergency personnel, police, firefighters and medical teams were deployed to the scene.
The Ciudad Rodrigo City Council expressed condolences to the boy’s family and friends, saying an event that should have been a celebration had become a tragedy for the community.
The council declared three days of mourning, with municipal flags to be flown at half-mast. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collapse. (Newswire)
