Kandy National Hospital has received three advanced medical equipment systems worth Rs. 620 million as part of efforts to improve diagnostic and treatment services, the Ministry of Health and Mass Media said.
The new facilities were officially commissioned for patient care on August 15 under the patronage of Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, with Deputy Health Minister Dr. Hansaka Wijemuni also attending.
The new facilities include a Rs. 250 million Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, a Rs. 180 million Mammography Unit and a Rs. 190 million CT Scanner System.
The equipment was funded through the Health System Enhancement Project supported by the Asian Development Bank.
According to the Ministry, the new CT scanner is the second such machine available for radiology services at Kandy National Hospital, while the new cardiac catheterization laboratory is also the hospital’s second Cath Lab.
The newly installed mammography system is one of five machines in Sri Lanka equipped with the country’s most advanced mammography technology, the Ministry said.
Speaking at the event, Minister Jayatissa said more than Rs. 8 billion worth of development projects are currently being carried out at Kandy National Hospital, including construction related to its cancer and accident treatment units.
He said the hospital, which serves as Sri Lanka’s second national hospital and provides tertiary care to a large population, has one of the highest patient waiting lists among hospitals in the country.
The Minister said the new equipment is expected to help reduce waiting lists and improve the efficiency of diagnostic and treatment services.
He also said a programme is underway to install 16 cardiac catheterization laboratories across Sri Lanka’s hospital system during 2026, with the new facility in Kandy forming part of that initiative.
