
A 16-year-old suspect has been remanded in connection with the alleged abduction and assault of a youth following a dispute linked to a video shared on TikTok.
Police said the incident occurred on June 1 near the Saddam Hussein Mosque in Eravur. The victim, who was travelling on a bicycle, was allegedly abducted by two individuals who arrived on a motorcycle and taken to a deserted land in the Sakathgramam area, where he was assaulted.
Investigations revealed that the attack stemmed from an argument related to a video posted on TikTok. The assault was reportedly recorded by several individuals present at the scene, and the footage was later shared on social media.
The victim received treatment for three days at the Eravur and Batticaloa hospitals.
Following the circulation of the video online, the victim’s mother lodged a complaint with the Eravur Police on June 15.
Police officers attached to the Women and Children’s Bureau of the Eravur Police Station launched an investigation and identified the suspects through the video footage.
A 16-year-old suspect from Meerakeni Road, Eravur, was arrested and produced before the Eravur Magistrate’s Court today (16). He was remanded at the Kalmunai Child Detention Centre until June 30.
Police have also arrested another suspect from the Mich Nagar area of Eravur. He is due to be produced before court on June 17.
