Cabinet clears new plan for Nuwara Eliya Post Office

The Cabinet has approved the proposal to repeal an earlier Cabinet decision to transfer the Nuwara Eliya Post Office building and its premises to the Urban Development Authority.

The Cabinet has instead approved the execution of a project to prepare this building for the activities of the Department of Posts and the use of tourism promotion activities.

According to the government, approval of the Cabinet of Ministers was granted at their meeting held in April 2024 to transfer the Nuwara Eliya Post Office Building to the Urban Development Authority, to which objections were raised by postal employees, civil organisations and the public.

Thereafter, it was decided to execute a project to prepare this building for the activities of the Department of Posts, as proposed earlier, while also preparing it for the use of tourism promotion activities.

Accordingly, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the proposal by the Minister of Mass Media to repeal the previous cabinet decision to transfer the Nuwara Eliya Post Office building to the Urban Development Authority.

Cabinet approval has now been granted to modify the building and the land to increase local/foreign tourist attractions and enhance new revenue generation paths. (Newswire)
