The “Clean Manning” programme to clean the premises of the Peliyagoda Manning Market, Sri Lanka’s oldest and principal wholesale market for vegetables and fruits, was held this morning under the patronage of Minister of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment Upali Pannilage.

The wholesale market, currently located in Peliyagoda, was observed to lack the environmental comfort and cleanliness required for traders to carry out their business activities under suitable conditions.

Authorities have also identified concerns relating to cleanliness and public convenience at the market, which attracts large numbers of traders and consumers daily for the buying and selling of vegetables and fruits transported from various parts of the country.

Accordingly, the “Clean Manning” programme was organised jointly by the Peliyagoda Manning Market General Traders’ Association, the Peliyagoda Urban Council, the Peliyagoda Police Station and the Urban Development Authority to improve the condition of the market premises.

The event was attended by the Deputy Director General of the Urban Development Authority, the Officer-in-Charge of the Peliyagoda Police Station, the President of the Peliyagoda Manning Market General Traders’ Association, police officers, government officials, members of the security forces and a large number of traders.
