The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has seized nearly 8,500 bottles and containers of drinking water allegedly bearing a fake Sri Lanka Standards (SLS) certification mark during a raid in Avissawella.

The raid was conducted on August 21 by officers of the CAA’s Competition Promotion Division.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the water had been produced at a factory in the Amithirigala-Ruwanwella area and stored at a warehouse in Avissawella ahead of distribution.

The CAA said the stock included containers ranging from 500 ml to 19 litres, which allegedly displayed a fraudulent SLS mark and Certificate No. 894.

The products had not yet been released to the market. Officers sealed and took the entire stock into custody, while further investigations are underway.

The CAA said legal action would be taken against those responsible following the completion of investigations.

The authority also urged wholesalers, retailers and consumers to verify certification marks and product information when purchasing goods and to report suspicious products through its 1977 hotline. (Newswire)
