The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka has determined that the Inland Revenue (Amendment) Bill is inconsistent with the provisions of the Constitution, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena informed Parliament today.

He said the Supreme Court, however, believes that on an overall consideration of the provisions of the bill, subject to the amendments as proposed by the Attorney General being moved at the committee stage in Parliament, the bill as a whole is not inconsistent with the provisions of the Constitution.

The court’s determination comes after several petitions had been filed at the Supreme Court in October challenging the bill.

The petitioners had sought a ruling that the Inland Revenue Amendment Bill is in violation of the Constitution of Sri Lanka. (NewsWire)
