A Presidential Election is likely to be held next year, said Saman Rathnapriya, the Director General of Trade Unions to President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Addressing a public rally in Badulla yesterday, Rathnapriya stated that no election will be held this year.
“There is no election this year. 2024 is the election year. From what we have learnt the Presidential election will most likely be the first election to be held next year. I propose that we elect Ranil Wickremesinghe as the President in 2024 with the people’s mandate,” he said.
Rathnapriya further said, “We came out and sought a change due to the realization that past political leaders were unable to govern the country. Normally, when a country falls it is taken over by the Opposition leader. However, that did not take place here.” (NewsWire)
