Covid deaths & patients continue to drop: More vaccines arrive

A stock of 400,000 doses of the Pfizer BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine arrived in Sri Lanka today. 

The stock of vaccines arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake this morning. 

State Minister Professor Channa Jayasumana said the latest consignment is a grant under the COVAX Facility of the World Health Organization (WHO). 

He added that another stock of 400,000 does of the Pfizer vaccine is expected to arrive tomorrow (01 October). 

The Government initially administered the Pfizer vaccine to those travelling overseas for education or employment.

Currently, the vaccines are being administered to youth between the ages of 15- 29, children 12 years and above, and children 12 years and above with special needs. 

Meanwhile, 172 COVID-19 vaccination centres will be in operation today across Sri Lanka. 

Mobile vaccination units will also be in operation in several parts of the country.

The Health authorities said Sri Lanka reported a total of 941 Covid cases yesterday.

The Director-General of Health Services announced that 61 Covid deaths were registered for Tuesday (28th September).

This takes the total death toll in Sri Lanka due to COVID-19 to 12, 847. (NewsWire)
