Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya stated that certain comments made on social media, particularly those targeting a child, a vulnerable person or a woman, clearly demonstrate the need for a cultured human being in society.
Speaking as Chief Guest at the Gampaha Literary Festival (GAMLIT 26) held at the Gampaha Municipal Council Auditorium yesterday (06), the Prime Minister emphasized that a cultured person is not merely someone with book knowledge or memorized information, but one who undergoes inner transformation through literature and artistic expression, bringing humanity and sensitivity into society.
She noted that such individuals would not cause humiliation, hurt, or disrespect to others.
Prior to the festival’s commencement, PM Amarasuriya visited exhibition stalls presented by schoolchildren in art, literature, and technology. She listened to their presentations on emerging trends, engaged in cordial exchanges, and praised both the children’s talents and the dedication of their teachers. She later presented gifts and certificates to students and schools that participated.
Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister said that organizing such a literary festival by a municipal council serves as an example to the entire country. She noted that the theme, “In Search of a Cultured Citizen,” is timely and aligns with the Government’s policy statement, which includes the objective of creating cultured individuals.
She stressed that alongside rebuilding the economy, developing infrastructure, and strengthening institutions, nurturing transformative human beings is also a key government priority. Marking two years since the start of the transformative journey, she said initiatives such as this are vital in fulfilling that responsibility.
The Prime Minister added that the festival is not limited to a few days, but through discussions, children’s dedication, training, and dialogue, it contributes to creating empathetic and sensitive citizens.
She reiterated that it is the Government’s responsibility to prepare pathways for schoolchildren according to their talents, as they are the future hope of the nation, and urged them to make literature and the arts part of their lives.
She expressed confidence that the initiative could be developed into a national‑level programme. (Newswire)
