Private-sector employees in Sri Lanka will be able to obtain railway season tickets online from October 1, under a new initiative announced by the Sri Lanka Railways.
The facility, previously available to public-sector employees, will be extended to private-sector employees who use trains for their daily commute.
Passengers will be able to apply for and obtain monthly season tickets through the Railways’ online reservation platform, seatreservation.railway.gov.lk.
The initiative was officially launched on Tuesday under the patronage of Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways Dr. Prasanna Gunasena, with the participation of Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Eranga Weeraratne.
Under the previous system, passengers seeking monthly season tickets were required to first obtain a railway identity card by submitting an application, photograph, proof of residence and a copy of their National Identity Card. The service was also available only during specified hours and within a limited period each month.
Under the new system, passengers will be able to complete the season-ticket process online from home after their identity and user account have been verified.
Account verification can be completed at railway stations offering seat-reservation facilities.
The project is being implemented jointly by the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development, Ministry of Digital Economy, Sri Lanka Railways and SLT-Mobitel as part of the broader programme to digitalise railway services. (Newswire)
